The recently installed Faraday cage, enveloping the rear side of the ion source to  reduce the probability of arch discharge effects induced by the Radio Frequency circuits.
It's a light metallic grid with meshes of about 1 cm, which allows the real-time visual inspection of RF drivers during operation.

 9 March 2018 -  Sparkling, in its extraordinary complexity, the protagonist of SPIDER, the ion beam source, is finally in place, inside the vacuum vessel of SPIDER (Source for Production of Ion of Deuterium Extracted from Radiofrequency plasma). The installation of the five-tonne beam source required extreme precision, ensured by laser trackers to assure the beam alignment.
The operation was carried out at the ITER Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF), at Consorzio RFX (Padua-Italy), where two test-bed experiments are being realized to develop the ITER most powerful plasma heating system: SPIDER, the 100 kV ion source prototype, and MITICA, the 1MV neutral beam injector prototype.
With the completion of the installation of SPIDER components and the start of the commissioning phase, "Today, we’ve reached an important ITER milestone” - said the NBTF Project Leader, Vanni Toigo – “The next step will be the start of SPIDER experimental phase which will open exciting and lively research for scientists”.

Millions of watts of heating power can be delivered to the plasma using neutral beam injection—the work horse of ITER's external heating methods. A research and development program is underway to test the critical heating neutral beam components before the manufacturing phase is launched.
