On 21th June 2019, Mr Huang Wei, the Chinese Vice Minister of Science and Technology (MOST) visited Consorzio RFX and the ITER  Neutral Beam Test Facility. Mr. Sonato, Consorzio RFX director, welcomed the delegation and introduced the fusion research in Padua. "We are particularly honoured to host today the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, before his visit to ITER in France".
Consorzio RFX has been assigned, by ITER, the task of developing  the neutral beam heating system of ITER. The demanding specification of 1MV energy and 50 MW from three HNB modules called for a project divided into 2 steps: the development of the 100 KeV source called SPIDER (the experiment entered in operation 1 year ago), to be used as a test and development bed and of full beam prototype called MITICA.
"I'm happy to be here because the NBTF is a priority for the ITER project - Vice Minister Huang Wei declared - I invite you to come to China to develop scientific and technological collaboration on fusion research." After the visit at Consorzio RFX the Chinese delegation will fly to France where they will visit the ITER site.

Consorzio RFX is proud to inform that on 24 May 2019, SPIDER, the ion source prototype at ITER-NBTF plant in Padua (Italy) operated by applying extraction and acceleration voltages, obtaining a hydrogen beam. The first SPIDER accelerated beam arrives under just one year from the inauguration of SPIDER on 11 June 2018. The news has been warmly welcomed by Bernard Bigot, Director General of ITER Organization, who expressed his “congratulations to all the people involved in the project and to the NBTF team in Padua.” The next few weeks will be dedicated to reproducing the beam at higher parameters. “Let’s move forward at full speed with safety and quality first as always” added Bernard Bigot, expressing his strong belief and support. “Beyond the scientific scope of this result, the production of the first accelerated beam in SPIDER confirms the good operation of the whole integrated power supply system procured by ITER-India and Europe, through Fusion for Energy (F4E)” tells Vanni Toigo, NBTF Project manager, thus stressing the international partnership of the enterprise. “It is an important milestone which has been reached thanks to the contribution of all the ITER parties involved in the project and the participation of various companies involved in the fabrication of the components” confirms Tullio Bonicelli, F4E Project Manager for Neutral Beam, Electron Cyclotron, Power Supplies and Sources. “As a scientist involved in the scientific exploitation of SPIDER, I’m looking forward to the coming months, during which, week by week, we will be measuring and collecting data which will be providing us with the first significant indications on the path to follow in future, ” says Gianluigi Serianni, scientific responsible of SPIDER.”

On 10th June 2019, an important step forward was done at the ITER-Neutral Beam Test Facility in Padua (Italy), in the integration of the MITICA power supply system.
The High Voltage Bushing (HVB), procured by the Japanese ITER Domestic Agency –JADA, in collaboration with Hitachi, was installed on MITICA vacuum vessel procured by F4E and manufactured by De Pretto Industrie SrL.
MITICA is the full size prototype of the neutral beam injector of ITER, being realized within the NBTF project, to allow testing and optimization of the ITER main additional heating system.
The HVB is a highly innovative R&D component, the design of which has required great effort and specific competences, as it not only works as an electric feedthrough between the transmission line and the injector, but also as an interface between two environments: the ultra-high vacuum inside the vessel and high pressure SF6 gas (Sulfur hexafluoride) insulated transmission line.
“ So many actors are involved in this operation, each of them with different responsibilities: F4E and JADA for the procurements of the components: Vacuum Vessel and HVB, the ITER Organization as the final owner of the components, and RFX responsible for the integration and the companies involved in the procurements and installation activities” says Vanni Toigo NBTF Project Manager.
All MITICA “utilities” will pass through the HVB component: light (1MV voltage), water (for cooling) and gas (for the plasma), in 50 tons of concentration of very high technology.
“Now that the installation has been concluded – continues Mr. Toigo - I’d like to thank everyone for the availability and collaboration. The milestone we’ve reached today is a new example of integration not only from a technical and scientific point of view, but also among the team”.
