SPIDER the most powerful hydrogenic beam source gets its main diagnostic system (Strike)

The assembling of the first carbon tiles of Strike, the main diagnostic system of SPIDER, has begun.Strike has been designed to characterize, in terms of uniformity and divergence, the negative ion beam produced by SPIDER.Let's see how this will happen. Strike is composed of a metallic structure that supports 16 unidirectional carbon fibers oriented along the direction of the particle beam accelerated through the 1280 beamlets of the ion source. The tiles are hit  by the beam and a thermal camera, on the backside, records the tiles temperature in order to profile the the neutral beam intensity. The tiles can intercept the beam up to 10s at full power, with a spatial resolution of about 2mm.Data obtained with Strike in SPIDER will contribute to the optimization of the Neutral Beam Injection system prototype MITICA, required to grant the conditions of fusion reaction in ITER (up to 150 million C°).Strike has been realized by Toyo Tanso under an European procurement launched by Fusion for Energy, the European domestic Agency of the ITER Project.
