Ecocompatibility of fusion

Fusion energy will not lead to CO2 production.

The European plans provide for energy policy actions for the reduction of CO2 through the internal reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40% by 2030 through the uptake of good practices foreseen in HORIZON 2020 and the implementation of knowledge and technologies aimed at decarbonisation of energy sources.

Fusion is part of this strategy because the production of electricity from fusion is a process that will not lead to CO2 production.

Studies are underway to assess how much it might cost to produce fusion energy. From these studies it emerged that fusion will be able to make an important contribution to the necessary decarbonization process, with costs comparable to those of fission plants (if not lower), without the problem of long-term nuclear waste management and without the risks of serious nuclear accidents.
